Where is Cappadocia?
Cappadocia (or Kappadokia) is located in Central Anatolia and has become a very popular tourist destination in Turkey. The unique geography of the region hits you immediately as you begin approaching the area. It attracts historians, who are mesmerized by it’s history dating as early as 6th century BC. Adventure seekers come to hike and bike its wondrous peaks and valleys. It attracts thrill seekers, who want to see the landscape sky high via hot air balloons.
Listed as a Unesco World Heritage site, the area is comprised of Goreme National Park and the cities of the Cappadocia region. Volcanic erosion over time has formed mountains, valleys, the famous “fairy chimneys” and cave dwelling areas. Underground cities are ready for your exploration. The beautiful valleys, combined with the picturesque rock formations, are visually stunning. You can even stay in a fairy chimneys for a unique stay!
How To Get To Cappadocia from Istanbul
By Air: Many tourists choose to fly from Istanbul to Cappadocia. Flights on both Turkish Airlines and budget carrier Pegasus Airlines run frequently from Istanbul. Turkish Airlines flights depart from Istanbul International Airport (IST) located on the European side, while Pegasus Airlines flies from Sabiha Gokcen Airport (SAW) on the Asian side. Flight time from Istanbul is approximately 80 minutes, making it enticing for travelers to squeeze in a quick visit while visiting Istanbul. The closest airports are Nevsehir Airport (NAV) or Kayseri Airport (ASR). Nevsehir Kapadokya Airport (NAV) is roughly a 30-45 minute drive to Cappadocia, depending on your drop off location. Kayseri Airport (ASR) is bit further, approximately an hour away. Once you arrive at either airport, you will need to arrange a transfer to your accomodations.
Modern Empty Nester Tip #1: We booked a very early flight on Turkish Airlines from Istanbul to maximize our time in Cappadocia. While no frills Pegasus Airlines can be less expensive, keep in mind that it typically flies to Keyseri Airport which is further away, thus increasing your transfer costs. Moreover, Pegasus Air does not provide any food or drink and you may have to pay for checked baggage. Turkish airlines, however, is a full service airline providing good service, food and drinks on your flight. Moreover, Turkish Airlines is part of the Star Alliance Network with codesharing with United Airlines — an added bonus. If you’re a frequent United Airlines traveler and Mileage Plus member, you can get mileage credit on your United Mileage Plus account by designating it when booking your flight on Turkish Airlines.
Modern Empty Nester Tip #2: Do not hesitate to email your hotel concierge/reservations desk for assistance! Due to our early morning arrival into Nevsehir Airport, we booked our transfer from the airport through our hotel. This was not only convenient but helpful, since we were not sure how plentiful transfers were arriving early morning to a small airport. Reducing your stress upon arrival is a key Modern Empty Nester tip!
By Bus: Bus service is available from Istanbul to Nevsehir, however this is approximately an 11-12 hour journey. Choose this option if you are on a tighter travel budget, don’t get car sick, and have extra days to spare since you will lose a day each way for travel time.
By Car: Driving yourself with a rental car is also an option if you have plenty of time. The drive from Istanbul to the Cappadocia region is about 8 hours, depending on traffic and the number of pitstops you make. The capitol city of Ankara, for example, is en route and a great place to visit along the way. Driving allows you to explore the country at your own pace. As in any foreign country, keep local driving rules in mind and be safe by staying on main roads and highways. Hiring a private driver is another way to reduce driving stress, sit back and enjoy the scenery.
