What is a “Girl Dinner”?
The premise of the Girl Dinner originated from a TikTok post by Olivia Maher, claiming that a peasant’s dinner of bread and cheese was in fact her dinner of choice. She proudly showed off her plate of bread, cheese, some grapes, cornichons and a glass of wine. The video went viral and now has well over $1 million views. Many people have jumped on the Girl Dinner bandwagon, erasing any guilt of a no cook evening with their favorite bites. It’s all about no fuss, no mess, no judgments. It’s not something you would do regularly, but a nice break once in a while from the ordinary and from the stove.
What Elements Make The Perfect “Girl Dinner”?
So what elements make the perfect “Girl Dinner”? Think of a charcuterie board, but without the board. You want to round it out with several elements to satisfy hunger, give you nutrition, hit cravings and give you that mouth feel you want from a dinner.
Here are some key elements to making a perfect “Girl Dinner”:
The Crunch: This element is an important one. Pick a favorite cracker you have on hand or toast up some bread to make it crunch. Adding the crunch element makes you feel like you are noshing on something yummy. For a Persian twist, I used Sangak Sesame Flatbread crackers that are absolutely delicious. I also added a side of roasted almonds, pistachios and walnuts for even more crunch and nutrition!
The Cheese: Cheese is a universal addition to the Girl Dinner. Cheese and crackers are always a treat, so slice up a few pieces of cheese. In addition, it adds calcium and protein to your meal. Include a good quality feta cheese for a Persian style plate!
The Dip: This is a nice element to add. Choose something with good mouth feel like greek yogurt, hummus, baba ghanoush or any spread that pairs well with your crackers and sides. Here I’ve added a quick mix of herbed greek yogurt — with dried mint, dill and some garlic salt. It adds a Persian twist, provides protein, and great with crackers and cucumbers!
The Veg: Adding in some veggies cools down the meal and rounds it out. Try cucumber spears, carrots, celery, peppers — whatever veg you have in the fridge that works well with your dip. Persian cucumbers, as pictured below, are smaller, easy to slice up and are delicious! Cornichons or pickled cucumbers can be added too for a savory element!
The Sweet: Adding in something sweet is a must! Fruit is one of the easiest to add to your Girl Dinner, is healthy and naturally sweet. You can add fresh fruit, such as grapes or apple slices. Or add in dried fruit or a small piece of dark chocolate. For my Girl Dinner, Persian Style, I added a few dried apricots to my nut mix.
Put A Persian Spin On Your Girl Dinner
The next time you make a Girl Dinner, put a Persian spin on it! It will elevate your plate in minutes! Throw in a glass of wine and now you are talking about a great, no mess, no fuss evening! Enjoy!
