Ski Sky High Peaks At One Of The Oldest Ski Resorts
Chamonix Mont-Blanc, or more commonly known as Chamonix, is on of the oldest ski resorts. It is located in the northern part of the Mont-Blanc region, between the two peaks of Aguille du Midi and Aguilles Rouge. Initially known as a mountaineering town in the late 1700s, Chamonix later became a popular ski destination. By the 19th century, wealthy families would venture to the area to enjoy a ski holiday. By 1924, Chamonix hosted the first winter Olympic Games, setting it on the world stage as a major ski destination.
Chamonix is not designed as a ski-in/ski-out location. The quaint village anchors the area, giving it a charming small town feel amidst the massive peaks surrounding it. After a long day, skiers happily kick off their ski boots and head to the village to find delicious dining, drinks and wonderful shopping.
The area actually consists of 5 different resorts/mountains which can be accessed via lifts and gondolas. Beginner and intermediate skiers flock to Les Houches and La Tour. Intermediate/advanced skiers head to Flegere and Brevent for more challenging slopes, while those who want even steeper runs head to the advanced slopes at Grands Montets.
Chamonix Mont-Blanc Is Easily Accessible
Chamonix Mont-Blanc is easily accessible, making it an internationally loved travel destination. Its unique location near the borders of France, Switzerland and Italy allows Europeans and global visitors alike to easily reach the resort by air, train or car.
Flying into Geneva Airport is a very convenient option. Geneva Airport is approximately a one hour and 15 drive to the town of Chamonix. The drive is a smooth and easy highway route with open borders. You can opt to rent a car and drive yourself. While this is a more pricey option, it will give you flexibility if you are there for a longer period of time and want to explore the region.
If you prefer not to drive, you can also hire a car transfer to pick you up. There are several transfer shuttle companies that go to and from Geneva Airport to Chamonix Mont-Blanc, such as CoolBus, Mountain Express or WhiteRides. You can also check with your hotel to see if they are able to organize a private transfer for you. Some hotels also provide complimentary shuttles to the slopes or nearby restaurants, making it very easy and convenient to get around.
Alternatively, you can also reach the area by train. However, due to the mountainous terrain, windy roads and limited access, you may still need to hire a transfer from the train station to take you to your lodging.
Modern Empty Nester Tip: Due to our hotel’s shuttle service, we never had the need to use our rental car. Be sure to ask if your hotel offers shuttle service prior to your arrival. This will help you determine whether you need to book a rental car versus a shuttle.

Upon our arrival, their friendly staff welcomed us warmly and even upgraded us to a duplex room.
While the Brevant lift is only 5 minutes away, the hotel provides complimentary shuttle service to the slopes for a quick and comfortable ride to the slopes with your skis. Ski storage is on site, making it easy to store your skis. If you need ski rentals, hotel guests receive a discount at a local ski rental shop that delivers yours skis right to your hotel locker. Super convenient!
Chalets:
If you prefer lodging with all the comforts of home, you can rent an apartment in town that is close to restaurants and shops. Moreover, those with rental cars can rent a picture perfect chalet in the scenic surrounding area, many of which have jacuzzis or saunas. Expedia and VRBO have beautiful chalets ranging from one-bedrooms to larger homes homes that can accommodate groups or families. Many are located close to lifts!
Chamonix Is Known For Great Food
Good food is well-known in the Alps and Chamonix is no exception. Your tastebuds will be in heaven with the array of options in store for you. While you can find typical French food, such as crepes and croissant, there are many gourmet restaurants sprinkled throughout the town of Chamonix. Local Savoyard specialties include local cheeses (reblochon, raclette, abondance, comte, to name a few), meats, seafood, potato and bread. One of the most iconic dishes of the region is Savoyard fondue. This decadent meal consists of a variety local melted cheese with an variety of meats, potato and bread. It used to be considered food that provides fuel during long winter months. It goes especially well with the region’s local wine called Vin de Savoie, which is delicious.
